In this episode of Barbell Conversations, Breadfruit is joined by musician Simon Pipe for a raw and reflective conversation about the struggles men face with ego, self-esteem, and mental health. Together, they explore how societal expectations shape the male ego, the signs and impact of low self-esteem, and how unresolved issues can lead to behaviours like self-medication and addiction.
Simon shares his personal journey, revealing how his battle with addiction stemmed from deeper struggles, including the loss of connection to religion. Breadfruit and Simon discuss the stigma surrounding depression and anxiety in men and examine the role of strength training and physical fitness as a potential path to healing and self-worth.
The episode also touches on the concept of “finding yourself in other people”—how relationships and community play a pivotal role in identity and personal growth. Drawing on Simon’s experience as a youth leader and worship leader, they reflect on the importance of religion (without necessarily being tied to traditional practices) and the need for men to connect with a higher power, whatever that may look like.
