Inclusion and Entrepreneurship with Deaf Queen Boss Kellina Powell

Entrepreneur and dynamic advocate for the deaf community, Kellina Powell shares more about her work to improve disability inclusion and mental health on this week’s episode of the Island Woman podcast with Dianne N. Squires.

Kellina Powell had an ear infection at age four that left her hard of hearing. At 29, she’s already eight years into entrepreneurship, and wants to extend her mission for disability inclusion to housing for people with disabilities in Canada. While her disability, as she says, is “part of my identity”, it has also not deterred her from achieving incredible things, and that’s what made this conversation special. Kellina talked to me about her multicultural Caribbean background; the professor who inspired her entrepreneurship career; the work her business, Kellina Empowerment Inc., is doing; becoming an author; being recognised for her advocacy; and of course, where she sits on the “ambition/wellbeing” scale.

Her message: “You deserve to be here”. I take this as a signal that our no matter our disabilities or differences, our lives and our work matter, and we should never shy away from committing fully to both.
