Why we’re all still obsessed with podcasts about true crimes

OPINION:  First there was Serial. Then In the Dark, My Favourite Murder, Criminal, Up and Vanished and, closer-to-home, Black Hands and Teacher’s Pet.

In podcast charts all over the world, in every language, the true crime genre prevails. It’s probably not surprising since true crimes, unsolved mysteries and myths around murder also occupy a large chunk of TV drama and film.

The latest true crime offering from podcast powerhouse Gimlet explores not only a mysterious serial killer, but our obsession with true crimes and myth-making. The Clearing follows the story of a woman named April Balascio, who had a turbulent childhood and, when she was 40, suspected that her father Edward Wayne Edwards was a serial murderer.

In 2009, she contacted the police in Wisconsin to tell them her suspicions that her father was involved in a double murder of a teenage couple and he was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple murders.

True crime podcasts continue to be popular and give a glimpse into the minds of those who have committed the ultimate taboo.
