The boom, and meteoric growth, of podcasts in New Zealand

The internet, let’s face it, is mostly a shambles.

Once heralded as the greatest engine for human progress since the printing press, it has instead succumbed to ineradicable bugs, located in human nature, spawning digital warrens of data mining, sham marketing, unbridled narcissism, brain-sapping click bait, pop ups, paywalls, propaganda and porn.

Less the printing press as envisaged by Gutenberg, in other words, than its mass dissemination – free of charge, along with bottomless barrels of ink – to every crackpot, huckster, loud mouth and oversharer on the planet.

Sure, it’s not all bad. Wikipedia is not without faults – an account I read there recently of Dylan Thomas’ death somehow failed to mention drinking – but it’s still a pretty amazing feat.
