Having taken a few weeks to recover from the end of Game of Thrones, HBO returns this weekend to its other zeitgeisty hit, the not-quite-fantasy world of Monterey, California, in Big Little Lies. The show that initially announced itself as a limited series has returned for an improbable second season, and even more improbably, has upped the star power by adding Meryl Streep to a cast that already includes Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley. They have our attention. But will they earn it?
