Twenty-four years after Nelson Mandela’s election, South Africa’s first post-apartheid generation is now coming of age; they are able to choose what to study in college, and to express themselves creatively without the strict censorship laws that harried their predecessors. For a handful of young black artists in Johannesburg, the country’s largest city, this flourishing creativity has helped ignite a dynamic up-and-coming music scene.
