All About Double Albums: EMA 150

All About Double Albums: EMA 150

Big Krit just dropped the double album ‘4Eva Is A Mighty Long Time’. Leading up to the release, Aaron McKrell wrote this article for Hip Hop DX:’2Wice As Nice: 5 Trademarks Of A Classic Double Album‘. We felt it was only right that we did an episode about double albums.
Keep in mind, this isn’t a Big Krit album review or a ranking of double albums. Instead, we just asked where did double albums belong in hip hop today? Do they still hold the importance they once had?

After that, we broke down Aaron’s article. He listed 5 things that every rapper should consider when crafting a double album. We talked about each of his pernts and decided if we agreed or not.

Finally, we ran down a list of rappers who hadn’t dropped double albums yet and asked would it be dope if they did.

This is a ridiculously long ass episode, but we felt we had to make up for being gone for 2 weeks. We don’t plan on that happening again. Apologies, playboi.

The Curious Case of Young Dolph: EMA 149

The Curious Case of Young Dolph: EMA 149

What’s really good with Young Dolph?! Mans get shot and start selling a bulletproof vest? Is it exploitation? Or capitalizing on a negative situation? Does this reinforce the thoughts of the typical hip hop naysayers that claim hip hop promotes violence? And if he “speaks his truth” on the new album, is it snitching or nah?

Tune in for all the tomfoolery as well as Yams of the Week and GAF.

Kendrick’s Advice To The Little Guy: EMA 148

Kendrick’s Advice To The Little Guy: EMA 148

Kendrick Lamar sat down for an interview with Forbes for their Under 30 summit. He spoke about a number of different things including advice for rappers who are on the come up and still trying to find their sound.

Here are the three questions we asked after peeping the video:
1 – Should artists look at what the game is currently doing in order to gain inspiration and use that to influence their sound? Or should they block it all out?

2 – If they DO take that route and they’re successful, should they return to their roots?

3 – After making it commercially, is the pressure now on? Or is it more on an artist that’s still trying to get their foot in the door?

Tune in for all of this and more!

10 Years Ago, 50 And Kanye Changed Hip Hop: EMA 144

10 Years Ago, 50 And Kanye Changed Hip Hop: EMA 144

9/11 not only marks a day in American history with the tragic events that brought the USA to a hault, but it also marks a day that gave us some of the best hip hop projects of all time. Many signify 9/11 with the same day that Jay Z dropped BluePrint or the day that Fabolous dropped his first album…but 9/11 is also the day that hosted one of the biggest hip hop album battles of all time. This year marks the 10 year anniversary of Kanye West’s Graduation vs 50 Cent’s Curtis , the results of this epic battle would change the complexion of the rap game forever.

In this episode, we spoke about an article titled How The Showdown Between Kanye’s ‘Graduation’ And 50 Cent’s ‘Curtis’ Changed Hip-Hop Forever written by Alex Swhear for Uproxx. Then we asked the following questions.

Q1:Was this the official changing of the guard from gangster rap to contemporary rap? If 50 would have won ,would that have changed the game as we know it today.
What could 50 have done different to actually beat Ye at the time?

Q2: As we look back 10 years later, Would top rappers of today still exist if the outcome were different ? .. Has the game been hindered or has it excelled due to the events that took place?

Q3: Ten years later which rapper is currently in the best position ?

Tune in and chat with us after you listen!

thx
